Truck-Mounted Reefer Units
Box trucks used for food, pharmaceutical, and floral delivery usually run a direct-drive or self-powered reefer unit mounted over the cab. We diagnose and repair Thermo King, Carrier Transicold, and similar units. Common calls are a unit that will not start, a unit that cools in the yard but not on the route, an alarm code that keeps returning, and a box that holds temperature during the day but warms up on standby power overnight.
Direct-Drive Units
On a direct-drive system the truck engine turns the reefer compressor through a belt and an electric clutch. When the truck engine has a problem, the box warms up. We check the compressor clutch, belt tension, the drive pulley, refrigerant charge, and the condenser mounted on the roof. We also look at engine idle and charging output, since a weak alternator or a low idle will starve the unit.
Self-Powered Units
Self-powered units carry their own small diesel engine. We service fuel filters, fuel pumps, injectors, glow plugs, starters, alternators, belts, oil, and coolant. A unit that cranks without starting is usually fuel or glow plugs. A unit that starts, then shuts down on a code, is often low oil pressure, high coolant temperature, or a sensor fault.
Refrigeration Repair
We repair compressors, condenser and evaporator coils, expansion valves, driers, and valves. We find and repair refrigerant leaks, pull a vacuum on the system, and recharge to the correct weight. Pressure readings on both sides tell us whether the problem is charge, air flow, or a failed component.
Electrical and Standby Power
Many delivery trucks plug into shore power at night. A failed standby motor, a bad plug, or a tripped overload will leave the box warm in the morning with no engine fault at all. We test the standby circuit, the batteries, the wiring harness, the door switch, and the temperature sensors that feed the controller.
Box and Door Repairs
A reefer truck loses cold through the body as fast as through the unit. We repair door seals, hinges, latches, strip curtains, and damaged insulation panels. We also check the drain lines, the evaporator fan, and the air return so cold air reaches the back of the box.
Truck Repairs on the Same Call
The same technician handles the chassis: brakes, air systems, lights, batteries, starters, belts, cooling system, and diesel engine diagnostics on the truck itself. One visit covers the reefer unit and the truck under it.
Preventive Maintenance
Reefer units are serviced by run hours. A standard service includes oil and filter changes, fuel filters, belts, coolant, a pressure check, a defrost test, and a pull-down test. Fleets with daily routes get this done at the yard before the morning load goes on.
When the Load Is at Risk
If a loaded truck loses temperature, give us the set point, the box temperature, the unit model, and any alarm code when you call. Call Salem Mobile Truck Repair at (971) 715-2497.
